“Chiropractors know that mom was right all along when she told us to “stand up straight.” But now there’s empirical evidence to give even more weight to her command. Good posture is essential to mental as well as physical health, keeping bones and joints aligned while boosting confidence. In fact, posture has been shown to have a greater influence on a person’s feelings of power than his or her job title or position.
In a 2012 Harvard study, participants who spent a few minutes in private “power posing” performed better in high-stakes mock meetings and interviews. Slouching one’s shoulders, not surprisingly, may have the opposite effect, lowering self-esteem.”
“Posture, power and health can be defined by the spine,” by Stephanie Earls, The Colorado Gazette, November 26, 2013. From this week’s “Foonotes for Balanced Living” from Foot Levelers.
Yesterday before treating a patient, I asked her notice in the mirror how her right shoulder was about 2″ lower than her left. She also mentioned she had been tripping on her right pant leg. She said she noticed the difference in her shoulders at home, but that her right low back was really hurting as well as her right front leg muscles. After treating her LEFT THORACIC spine (the part over her left kidney/lung area), I asked her to take another look in the mirror to see the changes. TOTALLY even shoulders and she stated she no longer had right leg or right low back pain!
SO, HOW CAN A CHIROPRACTOR WORK ON A TOTALLY OPPOSITE SPOT THAN THE AREA OF PAIN AND YET THE PAIN THE PERSON CAME IN WITH IS GONE AND ALL THE BODY IS BALANCED AGAIN?!? This happens COUNTLESS times and many patients ask this very question.
The reality is chiropractors consider the symptoms you are experiencing and then analyze your ENTIRE body to determine where the source of the pain or imbalance originates. You are a WHOLE being made up of many parts that ALL WORK TOGETHER. And your brain and nervous system controls every single cell of your entire body. If there is imbalance in your nervous system, there WILL BE dysfunction in the body- as minor as your chin doesn’t quite line up with your chest bone. The next time you take a look in the mirror and see imbalance in your shoulders or your head isn’t quite screwed on straight or you have pain in any joint or muscle, or you notice changes in your normal bowel and bladder function, consider how chiropractic can help restore normal function and balance to your entire body!
